AI could facilitate deception in scams and misinformation. Mr. Wozniak suggests regulation, clear labelling, and educating people to detect fraud. |
AI Could Make Scams Harder to Spot, Says Apple Co-Founder
Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple, has expressed his concern that artificial intelligence (AI) could make it harder to spot scams and misinformation. He fears that bad actors could use the technology to deceive people.
AI Content Should Be Clearly Labelled
Mr. Wozniak believes that AI content should be clearly labelled, and the sector should be regulated. He signed a letter in March with Elon Musk, calling for a pause in the development of the most powerful AI models.
Benefits and Concerns of AI
Speaking to the BBC's Technology Editor, Zoe Kleinman, Mr. Wozniak talked about both the benefits and concerns of AI. He believes that AI is so intelligent that it is open to bad players who want to trick people about who they are. However, he doesn't think AI will replace people because it lacks emotion.
Responsibility for AI-generated Content
Mr. Wozniak thinks that responsibility for anything generated by AI and then posted to the public should rest with those who publish it. He wants regulation to hold big tech firms accountable. However, he is sceptical that regulators will get it right, saying, "I think the forces that drive for money usually win out, which is sort of sad."
Preparing People to Spot Fraud
Mr. Wozniak believes that we can't stop the technology, but we can prepare people to be better educated to spot fraud and malicious attempts to take personal information. He was a pioneer of computing and says missed opportunities at the birth of the internet have lessons for today's architects of AI.
Apple's Approach to AI
The current boss of Apple, Tim Cook, told investors last week that it was important to be deliberate and thoughtful in how to approach AI. He views AI as huge and will continue to weave it into their products on a very thoughtful basis.
