What Is Happening
LinkedIn, a social media network for business professionals, has announced that it will be cutting 716 jobs out of its 20,000 workforce. The company will also be phasing out its local jobs app in China, called InCareers.
Streamlining Operations
The decision to cut jobs and close the China app was made to streamline the company's operations, according to a letter from LinkedIn's CEO, Ryan Roslansky. He explained that the market and customer demand are constantly changing, and the company needs to adapt to serve emerging and growth markets more effectively.
New Job Opportunities
Although 716 jobs will be cut, LinkedIn will be creating 250 new jobs. Employees affected by the cuts in its sales, operations, and support teams will be eligible to apply for these new positions.
Phasing Out InCareers
InCareers, LinkedIn's local jobs app in China, will be phased out by August 9th. This decision comes after LinkedIn mostly withdrew from China in 2021, citing a challenging environment. However, the company will still keep a presence in China to help companies operating there to hire and train employees outside the country.
LinkedIn in China
LinkedIn has been the only major Western social media platform operating in China. When it launched in 2014, the company agreed to adhere to the requirements of the Chinese government in order to operate there. However, this decision was met with criticism from US senator Rick Scott, who called it a "gross appeasement" and an "act of submission to Communist China."
Despite the job cuts and the closure of its China app, LinkedIn remains a popular platform for business professionals around the world.
